SOPHIA Workshop 2022 information

The city of Neuchâtel is located in north-western French-speaking Switzerland, at the foot of the Jura mountains and on the shores of Lake Neuchâtel, close to the Alps. Neuchâtel has a lovely medieval old town and the local countryside is picturesque. It is also the heartland of the celebrated Swiss watchmaking industry.

Travel and access:

Neuchâtel is easily reached by direct trains from Geneva (GVA) or Zurich (ZRH) airports, which depart hourly with travel times of 1.5 to 2 hours. The airport near Basel (BSL) is another option, though this requires two transfers and travel time is 2 hours. Schedules and tickets are available at www.sbb.ch. Tickets should be purchased before boarding, and can be found at vending machines or ticket counters in each airport train station.

EPFL Neuchâtel is located at Rue de la Maladière 71B. This is a 10-15 minutes’ walk from the railway station and a short bus ride from the city center. From the city center, take Bus 101 in the direction of Marin until bus stop Microcity. Purchase tickets from vending machines at bus stops before boarding.

If arriving by car, note that you must purchase a Swiss highway sticker at the border for CHF 40, valid for one year. The website of EPFL Neuchâtel has information about the motorway and exit to take. There is limited parking in on-site, so nearby garages and parking lots are options that are more suitable. Check their respective websites for rates: La Maladière Centre and Piscine du Nid-du-Crô.

Visitors who book at least one night in a hotel, holiday apartment, group accommodation or  campsite in the canton of Neuchâtel will receive the Neuchâtel Tourist Card. This card entitles you to free travel on all public transport in the canton of Neuchâtel (train, funicular, bus) and more!
